Did you know that smoking is still the single biggest cause of preventable death across the world? Every year, it claims more than 8 million lives and is directly linked to serious illnesses such as lung cancer, heart disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Here in the UK, the impact stretches far beyond health alone. Smoking costs the NHS around £2.5 billion each year, adding immense pressure to an already stretched healthcare system. Despite this, stop smoking services continue to make a huge difference—helping people quit and moving the nation closer to the government’s target of becoming smoke-free by 2030. Unfortunately, recent cuts in funding mean many of these vital services now have fewer resources, making their job tougher than ever.
Smoking rates vary widely depending on the type of work people do. The latest ONS Adult Smoking Habits in the UK report revealed that 25.5% of people in routine and manual jobs—including labourers, bar staff, lorry drivers, receptionists, and care workers say they currently smoke.
With so many lives and so much at stake, we thought it would be helpful to highlight some of the UK’s most trusted and effective stop smoking organisations. These groups continue to inspire, support, and guide people on their journey to a healthier, smoke-free life.
